Born as a daughter of an illustrious tailor, it is thus marked true that the acorn never falls far from the tree. However, Melinda's career in fashion was not a planned one. Fate as it seems played its role when Melinda won the Malaysia Young Designer Award in 1995, consequently receiving a scholarship to La Salle School of Fashion in Montreal, Canada to pursue a dream all of her own.

Carving a niche for herself in stage costume productions, Melinda was propelled into the demanding and exuberating world of fashion design. She has been involved in various stage productions in Malaysia, as well as the television and film industry in Canada. It is Melinda's early training as a prodigal child seamstress and her passion for the theatrics, costume culture and a penchant for the unusual beauty that have been a constant inspiration for the petite designer; the gothic tradition of 'avant-garde' is her signature, and eclectic vintage is her handwriting.

Melinda Looi’s unique ability to combine fiction and function in her designs has won her several awards. She has consistently proven her ability and creativity through many awards, notably three times the prestigious designer of the year award, in 2004 and 2006 at the Malaysian International Fashion Awards and in 2009 at the Mercedes Benz Stylo Fashion Awards.
